Your Research Opportunities
You will join a community of scholars at Missouri State. Research occurs in practically every corner of the school in a variety of ways. As a graduate student, you will be encouraged to engage in research because it enhances your education, and your findings may contribute to the public good. Missouri State receives millions of dollars in grants each year to finance a wide variety of projects.
Research funds for students
The Graduate College provides partial funding for students who present their research at national and international conferences. In addition, funds are available for research expenses for graduate students who are writing theses.
External funding for research
Missouri State can help fund research thanks to grants and other external funds. The University received 184 grants in Fiscal Year 2010, which generated $20,108,260 in additional resources. This was the fourth year in a row Missouri State received more than $20 million in grants.
Research and study facilities
You'll never have a hard time finding a place to study or conduct research. At Missouri State you'll have access to:
- 305,474 square feet of lab space featuring state-of-the-art equipment
- 237,866 square feet of classroom space
- 150,309 square feet devoted to study facilities
Library resources
The Duane G. Meyer Library is Missouri State's main library. If you need to collect facts or examine documents, this is a great place to start: The library has more than 2 million books and printed materials, and is the only United Nations document depository in the state. Meyer Library also has comprehensive electronic resources including an online catalog, database subscriptions, electronic indices, full-text resources and wireless Internet accessibility.
Share your research at forum
The annual Graduate Interdisciplinary Forum is a venue that allows graduate students to share their research and creative work with students and faculty from across campus and from area colleges and universities. The forum allows students to sharpen their presentation skills, receive feedback from people outside their disciplines and see the work of other graduate students.
Research centers
The University has centers and institutes where research efforts are concentrated. These tackle a variety of academic, social and environmental issues.
A few examples:
- The Bull Shoals Field Station, located in a Missouri Department of Conservation area in Taney County, is a place where students and researchers may study the ecosystems of southwest Missouri.
- The Bernice Warren Center for Archaeological Research conducts archaeological fieldwork and other projects on a contractual basis.
- The Community and Social Issues Institute was created in 2005 to address the research and service needs of the region. It serves as a liaison between for-profit and not-for-profit organizations and the members of the Missouri State community who might be able to help them.
- The Ozarks Environmental and Water Resources Institute supports efforts to protect and restore water quality in the Ozarks region of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas.
The Roy Blunt Jordan Valley Innovation Center is a seven-story facility dedicated to science and technology.- Other facilities include a K-12 laboratory school and nearly a dozen research centers, including the Center for Business and Economic Development, the Small Business Development Center, Center for Resource Planning and Management and the Center for Applied Science and Engineering.
